Asymmetry of Sagittal Otolith Shape Based on Inner Ear Side Tested on Mediterranean Red Mullet (Mullus barbatus Linnaeus, 1758): Comparative Analysis of 2D and 3D Otolith Shape Data

چکیده
Sagittal otolith shape analysis is one of the most widespread techniques worldwide to discriminate fish stock units, as this proxy integrates both environmental and genetic factors. All previous studies have been carried out using two-dimensional (2D) images, a partial representation whole otolith. However, prior identification unit boundaries, influence other potential drivers controlling must be analysed limit their bias. In study, presence asymmetry in depending on inner ear side (i.e., left versus right ears) was tested by comparing approaches 2D three-dimensional (3D) sagittal analyses. Eighty-two red mullet adults (Mullus barbatus) from three locations eastern part Mediterranean Sea were studied. Fourier harmonic descriptors computed outlines spherical 3D meshes used evaluate variation. The results multivariate mixed-effects model images showed that there no effect any location. There was, however, significant geographical for between Adriatic Levantine Sea. contrast, information effects differences significant. This first study data showing different same sample mullet. These demonstrate importance discrimination.

Disentangling fluctuating asymmetry from otolith shape
Fluctuating asymmetry (FA), defined as random deviations from ideal, perfect symmetry, has been hypothesized to be negatively associated with fitness and positively associated with stress. Fish otoliths deserve special attention in regard to this topic because their FA is relatively easy to measure, unlike the fitness of wild fish themselves. In addition, otoliths are convenient for estimating ...
متن کاملSelectivity of multifilament trammel nets of different mesh sizes on the red mullet (Mullus barbatus L., 1758) in Western Mediterranean, Turkey
Three mesh sizes of multiflament trammel nets (22 mm, 24 mm, and 26 mm) were used in Finike bay for red mullet (Mullus barbatus L., 1758). The sampling program was arranged during February to May 2012. Holt (1963) method was used for selectivity of trammel nets. Red mullet was the dominant species in 22 mm mesh size at 52.86%, followed by 25.7% with the 24 mm net and 21.43% with the 26 mm net. ...

متن کاملMechanistic basis of otolith formation during teleost inner ear development.
Otoliths, which are connected to stereociliary bundles in the inner ear, serve as inertial sensors for balance. In teleostei, otolith development is critically dependent on flow forces generated by beating cilia; however, the mechanism by which flow controls otolith formation remains unclear. Here, we have developed a noninvasive flow probe using optical tweezers and a viscous flow model in ord...
متن کاملA Comparative Study of Some Clustering Algorithms on Shape Data
Recently, some statistical studies have been done using the shape data. One of these studies is clustering shape data, which is the main topic of this paper. We are going to study some clustering algorithms on shape data and then introduce the best algorithm based on accuracy, speed, and scalability criteria. In addition, we propose a method for representing the shape data that facilitates and ...
